TOPIC: Road Salting: Impacts, Challenges, Optimization
Presenter: Marcia Willhite
Our February CSI Network is a follow-up session to our January topic. Sodium chloride is commonly used to de-ice roads and parking lots to maintain safe conditions during the winter season in areas where snowfall and ice are typical. Runoff carrying chlorides into the storm sewer system or directly into adjacent rivers, lakes, and streams can harm aquatic life. As stormwater professionals, we recognize both the need to maintain safe roads and the need to protect water quality from this stormwater pollutant. State MS4 permits generally require that road salting be addressed in the MS4 Stormwater Management Plan. We also acknowledge the need to partner with municipal, county, and state road and highway departments, which are typically the decision-makers for road salting protocols. This seminar will provide an overview of the impacts of road salting, the pros/cons of alternatives, and what “optimization” of salt application looks like. During the discussion period after the presentation, you are invited to share your experiences with this challenging aspect of stormwater management.
We are pleased to offer a series of monthly discussions on critical stormwater inspection issues. Called CSI Network, these discussions are delivered via interactive webinars, and the topics apply to municipal, construction, and industrial regulations, permits, and inspections.
These discussion meetings are free to current Certified Stormwater Inspectors (CSI)™, while non-current CSI graduates and the general public can join sessions for a $25 registration fee.
CSI Network meetings are held on Wednesdays each month, beginning at 1:00 PM Eastern Time. Each session is scheduled for no more than 90 minutes. Check the registration calendar for exact dates.
